4th North Street Salt Lakc City, looking north, Grants Tower and the intermodal hub (Frontrunner's current southern goal) are behind us. Obviously this UP crossing signal has to go. Though Frontrunner is mostly single track, it will be double through here. |

Frontrunner at left, UP at right. Two things are going on here. Frontrunner trackage is being laid and a 90 degree reverse curve is being taken out of the UP tracks. Grants Tower is the squat little two story white building, left center. It's boarded up now, but back in Rio Grande days in was manned 24/7 to control this intersection of tracks (UP, D&RGW, WP). Being the "new commer" Rio Grande had to maintain it. Before Rio Grande became a fallen flag, this interlocking was remoted from Denver. Now I guess it's remoted from Omaha. This spot is about 4 blocks west of Temple Square in SLC. We are looking south. The intermodal hub cannot be seen here, but is off to the upper right.

Until extended to Utah County to the south, this will be the southern terminus of Frontrunner, the intermodal hub (bus TRAX light rail, and maybe Amtrak, though Amtrak continues to inhabit their luxurious Amshack) |

This is the new downtown end point of TRAX light rail. The intermodal hub is to the right, and the Amshack is the squat tan building in the distance. |

This is just to the left of the previous picture, facing east. In the distance is the old Rio Grande station. We are facing its back. It is now completely land-locked, but its classic Rio Grande sign on the roof is lit up magnificently every night. The State of Utah, which owns the station, tried to take the sign down, but the Rio Grande Cafe on the lower floor insisted that their lease included the presence of the sign, so we still have it. Good for them! |
